I have decided not to propose my Library Resolution this evening. The resolution would have increased the 2024 Library tax levy by $220,535 compared to the 2023 library tax levy and would have fully funded the 2024 Library Budget Request using tax levy, non levy revenue, and Library reserves.
The resolution was the subject of a significant amount of confusion and misinformation on social media and in the press, leading to concern and anxiety among a substantial number of Marathon County residents.
I have decided that saving $165,000 for Marathon County taxpayers is not sufficient justification to cause concern and anxiety for a significant number of our residents. As I stated when I first discussed the potential resolution, I was looking for an amicable agreement between the Marathon County Board and the MCPL Library Board and staff and this resolution clearly did not provide that.
I will continue my diligent efforts to keep Marathon County tax rates low and to monitor the County’s finances.
