At its April 16th Organizational Meeting, the Board voted down a proposed amendment for the members of Standing Committees to select their own Chairs and Vice Chairs, after several past Standing Committee Chairs made comments. The comments included suggestions that the Board could have input into the selection of the Standing Committee Chairs and Vice Chairs at the upcoming Tuesday April 23rd meeting.
Supervisor Langenhahn – “… The other thing I would add is that the Board ultimately holds the key to this thing because they confirm the appointments, they confirm the recommendations, right. We have the authority here. The Chair and the Vice Chair don’t. Thank you.”
Supervisor Bootz – “… we’ve elected our two leaders and our Chair and our Vice Chair and then we confide in them because it does go to the full Board after they appoint the Chair and Vice Chair of the Committees so there is a time at the full Board meeting where you can say no we don’t we can pull that out and say we don’t want that person …. “
It is not clear exactly how the suggestions by Supervisors Langenhahn and Bootz would work in practice. Presumably, if the Board voted down the Standing Committee appointments and/or the Standing Committee Chair and Vice Chair appointments, Chair Gibbs and Vice Chair Dickinson would confer during the Tuesday meeting and then offer an amended set of appointments for consideration.
Obviously, the best path forward would be for Chair Gibbs to provide a set of Standing Committee, and Standing Committee Chair, and Vice Chair appointments that fairly represent the newly elected Board.
